World Suicide Prevention Day – 10 September 2026

It is World Suicide Prevention Day today (10 September).  In our counselling services we regularly see people who are struggling with thoughts of suicide and know that there are many more people in our community who also have these same struggles.

There is a free tool that can help support people experiencing these thoughts or mental health difficulties.

The award-winning Stay Alive app is a tool that provides:

  • Immediate access to crisis support services, including national, local and online helplines.
  • A personalised Safety Plan to help people recognise warning signs and identify ways to stay safe during difficult times.
  • Practical tools to support wellbeing and resilience, including grounding techniques, breathing exercises, a Wellness Plan and a LifeBox for storing important memories, photos and reasons for living.

The app is free to download via your phone’s app store or online via your computer.

If you need immediate support:

  • NHS 111 Mental Health Service: Call 111 and select the mental health option (or ask for the Mental Health Triage Line) for 24/7 support.
  • NHS Help in a Crisis for local safe havens via https://hiowhealthcare.nhs.uk/help-crisis
  • Samaritans: Free, confidential support, 24 hours a day on 116 123.
  • Shout: Free, confidential text support, available 24/7. Text HANTS to 85258.
  • Support After Suicide: If you have been bereaved or affected by suicide, support is available through Cruse Bereavement Support. Self-referral can be made online via https://crusenow.org.uk/
